Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra, MD
Stroke and Magnesium Deficiency
The Two Often Come Together
Death from stroke is the number three killer in the US and is the most prevalent cause of adult disability. The most common reason for stroke is a blocked or burst blood vessel in the brain. Each year, 700,000 new strokes occur in addition to 100,000 recurrences.
Evidence is mounting that magnesium may play a critical role in the cause of strokes and the healing process during and after a stroke.
A study of 98 stroke patients admitted to the Emergency Room of three hospitals in New York exhibited early and significant magnesium-ion deficits. The stroke patients also demonstrated a high calcium to magnesium ratio, which are signs of increased vascular tone and cerebral vessel spasm.
Another meaningful study was undertaken in Taiwan. In this study, all deaths due to stroke among Taiwan residents (17,133 cases) from 1989 through 1993 were compared with deaths from other causes (17,133 controls). It was determined that the higher the magnesium levels in drinking water used by Taiwan residents, the lower the incedence of stroke.
Brain Surgery and Recovery
Many surgeons today will administer magnesium to patients before and after undergoing brain surgery. This is done to prevent stroke, to keep excess calcium from entering damaged cells and to decrease the risk of seizure and spasm.
In her book, "The Magnesium Miracle", Dr. Carolyn Dean, MD, states "Many surgeons make it standard procedure to administer intravenous magnesium to all their surgical patients before an operation. Dr. Bernard Horn, a general surgeon in California, has given intravenous magnesium sulfate to more than 8,000 patients over a 15 year period. Dr. Horn reports that blood pressures as high as 200 over 150 would normalize before surgery.
