"Magnesium has solved more 'incurable' and 'mysterious symptoms' than any other mineral I have observed in 31 years."
(Dr. Sherry Rogers, MD)

"Without enough magnesium, cells simply dont work."
(Dr. Lawrence Resnick, MD, Cornell University)

"It is shocking, frankly, how little people know, how little doctors know, about this vital mineral (magnesium)."
(Dr. Jay S. Cohen, MD)

"Most modern heart disease is caused by magnesium deficiency. A vast and convincing body of research, largely ignored, has convinced us and many collegues of this fact."
(Dr. Mildred Seelig, MD, MPH, author of the Magnesium Factor)

"Studies have shown that 90 percent of individuals with type II diabetes have low levels of free intracellular red blood cell magnesium."
(Dr. Zachary T. Bloomgarden, MD, Endocrinologist)

"The more I learn about magnesium, the more convinced I am that doctors are missing a huge opportunity by not making it one of their drugs of choice."
(Dr. Carolyn Dean, MD, author of The Magnesium Miracle)

"Magnesium is the most important mineral to man and all living things."
(Dr. Jerry Aikawa, The University of Colorado)

"Research has overwhelmingly demonstrated the critical relationship between low levels of magnesium and cardiovascular disease. So many hypertensive (high blood pressure) patients could benefit from increased intake of this mineral."
(Dr. Julian Whitaker, MD, one of America's best-known doctors of integrative medicine)

"If magnesium is deficient, bones are more fragile."
(Katherine Tucker, Ph.D., of Tufts University)

"Magnesium depletion may represent the most frequently unrecognized electrolyte abnormality in clinical practice today..There appears to be as much as an 85 to 95 percent shortfall in the clinical recognition of abnormal blood magnesium..The role of magnesium in cellular function, both in health and disease, remain largely unknown to medical clinicians."
(Dr. Robert Whang, MD)

"A link between magnesium, diabetes and hypertension seems established beyond a reasonable doubt."
(Dr. Lawrence Resnick, MD, Cornell University)

"Magnesium deficiency is one of the most common nutritional problems in the industrialized world today. This deficiency is the result of agricultural practices, food preparation techniques, and dietary trends. The health implications are nothing short of catastrophic."
(Mark Sircus, Ac, OMD, author of Transdermal Magnesium Therapy)

"For millions of Americans, correcting magnesium deficiency could be one of the most important steps on the road back to health."
(Dr. Alan Gaby)

Magnesium and Sports
Magnesium Is Required for Optimal Performance

No serious athlete or trainer can afford to overlook the benefits that magnesium brings to athletic performance and the recovery process. Research suggests that even a small shortfall in magnesium can lead to greatly reduced performance and stamina.

Increased (inefficient) oxygen consumption and reduced metabolic efficiency will often result when an athlete is deprived of proper magnesium levels. Compounding the issue is the challenge to eat large amounts of magnesium-rich foods such as pumpkin seeds, nuts and whole bran on a consistent basis. Often this proves difficult and unrealistic, as an athlete's requirement of magnesium intake far surpasses that of an average person.

Studies have shown that daily supplementation of 450 mg of magnesium and 30mg of Zinc can increase testosterone levels up to 30%.

Confirming this assertion, Dr. Lorrie Brilla of Western Washington University has found that magnesium and zinc supplementation of their NCAA football players results in increased testosterone levels and muscle strength. Dr. Brilla reported that during an eight-week spring training program, athletes receiving the magnesium had 2.5 times greater muscle strength gains than a placebo group.

Dr. James Thor, National Director of Extreme Sports Medicine says "Magnesium is essential to a diet for people who are under a lot of stress or want to experience the ultimate rush". Dr. Thor also added that athletes under continual stress produce excessive amounts of lactic acid in their muscles, which has been linked to higher levels of anxiety.

Athletic Recovery

Many doctors believe that magnesium is the single most important mineral to sports nutrition. Not only does it help optimize an athlete's performance, but it speeds up recovery from fatigue and injuries.

Optimal muscle contraction and relaxation is the foundation of an athlete's performance. Proper magnesium levels are required for muscles to relax fully following a contraction. Dr. Jeff Schutt believes that injuries to hamstring muscles can be partially avoided through intake of magnesium and stated that "A shortened hamstring is a result of lack of available magnesium."

Dr. Mark Sircus states "Liquid magnesium chloride can simply be sprayed and rubbed into a sore Achilles tendon to decrease swelling. And soaking the feet in a magnesium chloride foot bath is the single best thing - apart from stretching - that you can do for yourself to protect from, or recover from hamstring and other injuries. The only thing better is a full body bath or to have a massage therapist rub magnesium chloride in as they work deeply on the muscles."

Magnesium Loss - A Common Problem

An important consideration for athletes is the rate of magnesium loss that occurs during heavy physical activity. Magnesium as well as zinc, chromium and selenium are excreted in the sweat or as part of the process of metabolic acceleration. Also, the rate of magnesium loss is increased in conditions of high humidity and high temperature.

Dr. Sarah Mayhill states that "Heavy exercise also makes you lose magnesium in the urine and explains why long distance runners may suddenly drop dead with heart arrhythmias."

Dr. Mark Sircus adds "There is virtually no one that cannot benefit greatly from increasing daily magnesium intake. In terms of health and longevity magnesium is essential. For the professional athlete it means the difference between winning and losing, and in some cases, living and dying."
